Art education

I studied under Reginald Marsh at the Art Students League,the Museum of Modern Art and attended Pratt Institute’s Industrial Design course which ‘held on’ to three of my design creations.
At the age of 8 or nine, I was drawing original cartoon 'storyboards' on narrow strips of paper from a printer's shop's waste barrels.
Probably the first of its kind art show is my one-man show at "Art From The Heart" Gallery and coffee shop. It consists of 24 Empathic Sketches. Does anyone out there on the planet know of another art show that was exclusively Empathic Sketches? If so, I will withdraw the above claim to fame, or whatever.
Its going well (the show) and will end on September 4th, 2010. Its more encouraging for me now than ever before to continue creating these types of sketches. My hope is that many others will start to do them. This is an art form that anyone, repeat, anyone can attempt and probably get a kick out of the fun involved.

A brief history of Empathic Sketches

In 1962 I started my own full service advertising agency in New York servicing small and medium sized commercial, retail, wholesale, professional and industrial clients in 40-50 various professions and manufacturing industries.

In 1989 one of my regular, friendly business sources asked me to sketch a drummer for one of their clients. Being busy with ad campaigns, designing and PR work, I responded that I hadn’t drawn human figures for many years and to get another artist. They said that they didn’t know another artist, would I please do the drawing. So, to please them I decided to speculate by doing a ‘quickie’. If they didn’t like it, no charge for my effort and we would maintain our good relationship.

On my desk, I had a cheap, 6”x9” white note pad with an imprint: “From the desk of Sam Chinkes”. I grabbed the pad and my blue ink ballpoint pen. In my mind I saw a drummer (not exactly a clear, detailed picture to be sure) and proceeded to sketch very rapidly using a lot of ‘nervous energy’. In five or six seconds I was looking at a sketch of a drummer in action. I did not add, subtract or change anything. I faxed the sketch to them and forgot about it, knowing that they would appreciate that at least I ‘gave it a shot’.

The next day they called, their client loved it and now wanted two additional sketches of other musicians. In all, I did eight sketches, all on the same pad with the blue ink ballpoint.

Nine years later, I rediscovered my originals on browned, cracked paper in my garage. Thanks to the computer and internet I now have more than 60 sketches, including other subjects, i.e., sports and entertainment with some sales of prints for which I receive a commission. Now there are greeting cards and t-shirts with those sketches. Folks are buying prints of my original sketches via the internet. RANDOM THOUGHTS ABOUT EMPATHIC SKETCHING:
You don't have to be an artist to enjoy, or do this kind of art. Everyone can try this who has a pencil, pen, crayon, etc., etc. Do it, its fun.
You can call it scribbling, if you wish, but its still fun to do.
To do an empathic sketch, you cannot be copying anything that you can readily see. It just won't be possible. If you are really attempting to do an empathic sketch you must draw the lines very quickly, no time, really, to think about whether they are accurately depecting what you intend to draw.
If your sketch is perfect, you cheated. If you dare to use any tool as a guide, i.e., ruler, compass, french curves, templets or any other tool designed to aid in graphic art, including an eraser of any kind, you cheated. Period.
The amount of time, in seconds, required to complete a sketch is dependent on the complexity of the sketch as well as the amount of energy that you can employ.
Dare youself to try doing an Empathic Sketch. Creative artists usually enjoy trying something different. Its certainly not likely to hurt your artistic ability in any way. It is more likely to improve your ability to concentrate on the blank paper in front of you.
